Shoulder-Launched Munitions (SLMs) allow Soldiers to engage enemy personnel, light armored vehicles, bunkers and other field fortifications in close combat. They are highly mobile and lightweight; improved versions can be safely fired from confined spaces found in urban environments.

AT-4  The M136-series shoulder-launched munition consists of a free-flight, fin-stabilized, antiarmor rocket packed in an expendable launcher that  also serves as a watertight transport and storage container. M136- series shoulder-launched munitions can be employed in limited visibility, with the aid of NVDs or with artificial illumination.

AT-4 CSAT-4CS  The M136A1 AT4CS is similar to the M136 AT4, but uses a different propulsion system. This system enables the M136A1 AT4CS to be fired from an enclosure, a capability that the M136 AT4 does not have.

Bunker Defeat Munitions  The M141 BDM consists of a free-flight, fin-stabilized, multipurpose munition that consists of an 83-mm high-explosive (HE), dual-mode rocket sealed in an expendable launcher that also serves as a watertight transport and storage container. The M141 BDM addresses the need to destroy hardened targets, such as bunkers and other fixed enemy positions, and incapacitate the enemy personnel inside. It can be employed effectively against double-reinforced concrete walls up to 8 inches thick, triple-brick structures, and standard earth and timber bunkers. It can also perforate up to 20 mm of rolled homogenous steel, which provides a capability against light-armored and thin-skinned vehicles. The M141 BDM can be employed in limited visibility, with the aid of night vision devices (NVDs) or with artificial illumination.

M72 LAW  The M72-series shoulder-launched munition consists of a free-flight, fin-stabilized, antiarmor rocket packed in an expendable launcher that also serves as a watertight transport and storage container. Available M72 launchers are divided into two groups: the M72A2/A3 and the M72A4/5/6/7 (improved M72). M72-series shoulder-launched munitions can be employed in limited visibility, with the aid of NVDs or with artificial illumination.

Carl Gustaf  The highly versatile Carl-Gustaf system is a true multi-role, man-portable shoulder-fired weapon. The system offers the soldier various types of ammunition, ranging from armour penetration and anti-personnel, to ammunition for built-up areas as well as special features like smoke and illumination. The M3 version of the launcher features significant weight reduction and improvements for urban operations.

Close Combat Weapon Systems

Current programs include the tube-launched, optically tracked, wireguided (TOW 2)/TOW 2A/TOW 2B, Javelin, improved target acquisition system (ITAS) and Improved Bradley Acquisition System (IBAS).

CCWS Excerpt from Weapon Systems Book

Javelin  The Javelin provides accurate, medium-range close combat missile capability for the infantry rifle platoon and company. The weapons squad of each rifle platoon includes a two-Soldier antitank section with the Javelin as its primary weapon. The Javelin is used in offensive operations to provide precision, direct fires that suppress or destroy enemy armored vehicles, and to destroy bunkers, buildings, and other fortifications during urban combat. In defensive operations, the Javelin might be used to overwatch obstacles, destroy armored vehicles, and force the enemy to dismount prematurely, exposing his infantry to small arms and indirect fires. The Javelin can destroy targets from medium ranges (65 to 2,000 meters), including helicopters and fortified positions. The Javelin's infrared sight capability can be used to conduct surveillance in all types of weather. The Javelin is a dual-mode (top attack or direct attack), man-portable, close-combat missile that can engage and defeat tanks and other armored vehicles. The missile is contained in a disposable launch tube/container that has a reusable tracker. It is a fire-and-forget weapon system. The Javelin's soft launch reduces the visual and acoustical signature of the missile, making it difficult to identify and locate, at even moderate distances.

TOW / ITAS  The TOW (Tube-launched, Optically-tracked, Wire command-link guided) Missile System consists of a tripod, traversing unit, missile guidance set, launch tube, optical sight, battery assembly and any of five missile variations. The TOW missile system also includes a thermal sight that provides a capability for operations at night, in reduced visibility, and in a countermeasure environment. TOW missiles are all-up rounds encased in a disposable container.
